After playing with this, I was curious if anybody else had come up with the same algorithm. My initial thought was that recursive subdivision is not very GPU-friendly, but you might be able to achieve the same effect using multiple shader passes. For example, you raymarch cones in patches of 8x8 pixels in the first pass, and then you feed those starting distances to a second per-pixel rendering pass.
