Still, it’s hard to shake the sense that Fatsis is skeptical about its future and keen to sniff out doom. A catastrophe would make for a zestier book. That things eventually bounce back means that he seems uncertain, in the end, what to say about the dictionary. Over the decade-plus he spent thinking about it, it had some ups and some downs. Its future is unclear, but so is the future in general.
